So here's my picks for the top runners in the age group categories. Female Youth Division: (12 and Under) Rochester MA, Jennifer Hughes , she is 10 years old, and in the Fairhaven Father's Day 5K ran 24:45 at a 7:45 per mile pace. Look out for this young lady, you are going to be reading a lot about her. She has the look of the moose when she comes in. Most often you see the kids jogging into the finish, not this one. She is in a full sprint. Male Youth Division: Sad to say, there were no qualifiers. High School Female Division: (13 to 18). Sad to say, there were no qualifiers. High School Male Division: (13 to 18). Zack Sinkivich from Fall River. This one was a no-brainer. He ran more race, and always finished in the top 5. This coming year is going to be a challenge as he moves into the Open Division. Open Female Division: (19 to 29). This year, I am happy to say, has become a tough division to win. Bottom line is that the young ladies are back, and this year it is New Bedford's, Jennifer Almeida. Jennifer was consistently in the top five in the five races that she entered. Look for her to be back on top in 2009. Open Male Division: (19 to 29). So who do I pick here? Keith Nadeau or Jeff Reed. Any given day Jeff is going to beat Keith. Keith moved up into the division this year, and Jeff is in the Sub Masters. Keith ran in 8 races and came up with 80 points. Jeff was in 6 races and scored 69 points. But, I'm going with Fairhaven's Keith Nadeau. I'm putting the pressure on him, because I don't think he knows just how good he could be. In fact I would like to put him in the hands of Coach Reed, and I'll bet Mr. Nadeau runs in the very low 15's for a 5K without breaking a sweat. Sub Master Female Division: (30 to 39). Sheryl Briggs-Coye from Bourne, MA. 7 races, 28 points, no body close. Not only that she contacts good ole JB for advise sometimes. She did get married, and that may change things. She'll probably get faster. Sub Master Male Division: (30 to 39). Sal Corrao is what an old time runner of the roads is like. He picks them all. He is the heir apparent to Carlton Smith. Run back to back races in a week-end? No problem! Five bucks say he even trains in combat boots sometimes. No body close here. Sure Mike Norton and Angel Martin are in this division, but it is Sal who toes the line at all of the races. Master Female Division: (40 to 49). Christine Anderson of New Bedford and Pamela Kelly of Dartmouth were in a flat out dead heat. Christine had a total of two more miles then Pam. So I had to look else where. It was in that miserable weather at Kathy Lopes' Ft Phoenix 5K. Christine ran a 5:51 per mile and finished second to "Julie You Know Who", and Pam was a ways back running at an 8 per mile clip. So, it's Christine. I have a feeling it is going to be that way for a long time. But if she slips, Look out for Pam. Master Male Division: (40 to 49). This one pulled at JB's heart strings, folks. How do you choose from your home town guy, Joe Francisco, or from one of the nicest people on the planet, Peter Ribeiro from Dartmouth. You got to look at the data, and the data indicated that is has to be Joe Francisco. Ran a couple more races then Peter, and had more points. Senior Male Division: (50 to 59). This one came down to Felix Almeida and Carlos Barbeiro. Felix is just faster when they go head to head. So my choice is Felix Almeida. They both ran the same amount of races, but Felix had more miles and points on Carlos. Senior Female Division: (50 to 59). If Acushnet's, Cheryl Healy and Mattapoisett's Tina Marie Varzeas run head to head, Tina is going to win. However this year we have found the answer to the Female Division's Carlton Smith., it is Cheryl Healy. Tina Marie had an injury season, but Cheryl Healy ran more races, ran longer, and consistently scored higher. Her points put her into serious contention for Female Runner of the Year. So this year it is Cheryl. Veteran Female Division: (60 to 69). From Swansea, Ann "Steady As She Goes" Bell. Ran more races, ran further, scored higher. If she is not in your race, you forgot to advertise it. Or, your race is in big trouble. Veteran Male Division: (60 to 69). Ok! Ok! I heard all of the arguments. Jack Daniels is faster then Woody Wilson. Woody ran one more race then Jack, and also ran more miles. Jack is looked upon as an icon at age 60, but so is Woody. In Fairhaven, Woody choose the 5K, Jack choose the 10K. In Acushnet, Woody was there and Jack wasn't. But here it comes folks. The Rains Of Ft. Phoenix. Jack beats Woody by 4 minutes. I was going to call this a tie until I came to my senses. It's Jack Daniels on the rocks and in the rain. Grand Master Female Division: (70 and over). Barbara Belanger. Ladies, This is your idol. She has it all; strength, talent, endurance, and just about one of the nicest ladies you will ever meet. Grand Master Male Division: (70 and over). Joe Fernandez. If you are a road runner, and you hear this name, and you ask the question; "Who's that?". You need to be whipped with one of your old dirty shoes. I put this name in the same category as Johnny Kelly, Bill Rogers, and Larry Olson. Was Joe ever in their class in terms of speed? No. He is just out flat in their class of legends. He just turned 80, and has begun to set records in that age group too. I've met Johnny, Billy and Larry, but it is Joe that I call my friend. |
