Lynn V is stretching it out:
Hi JB –
With two little guys at home, 4 1/2 and 1 1/2, it always seems that I was short on time for many things, but especially my runs. I would often cut my stretching routine down to the bare minimum to give myself more time to run. Looking back, this wasn’t such a great idea. Spending a few minutes stretching, might have prevented me from my injury. Stretching isn’t as thrilling as lacing up your running sneakers and getting outside for a run, but it’s better than spending ones time in the chiropractors office 3 times a week and not being able to run at all. I have come to realize that stretching regularly is one of the most important things I can do to protect my body from pounding the pavement. I have also found that the benefits of a good stretch helps get the muscles ready, increases flexibility and their range of motion while reducing muscle soreness after running those long training runs. The lesson learned - build stretching into a regular schedule both before and after daily runs — do a pre-run stretch after a warm-up run, since “warm” muscles stretch more easily. Stretching slowly and stretching often will keep runners running for the long-term. Just some food for thought. Now if only I could get my husband to make the bed! J Lynn V. JB: This be Lynn Vasconcelos who is in serious training with her side kick Gretchen Parmentier for a fall marathon. She is right about the stretching, but you have to do it correctly, and not just some motions you go through to look good at a race. There is tons of stuff written about the benefits of yoga and stretching. Just do like Lynn says, and do it right. Lynn? What's this with the no bed making? I got to renew my contract with Mrs. B. Nah! Maybe I'll wait awhile. Acushnet Team Competition Looks like good friend Scott Anderson and Joe Navas are serious about taking away the dough in Acushnet Men's Open Team competition with the Whirlaway Racing Team..Joe Navas informs me that it most likely will be Eastham's Thomas Deeg, who posted a 2:34 in last year's Boston Marathon. Joe and Tom helped Whirlaway to a second place finish in the team competition at the 2009 Bay State Marathon. Can three time winner, Eric Narcisi band together that RTK Mizuno Team that ruled the roost in 2007 and 2008? Rumor has it the Thirsty Elephants are joined at the hip again this year. That would be Jeff Reed, Sal Corrao, and Eric Worsley. They could make it very interesting if Whirlaway is having an off day. Last year the J Team was very strong with JoAnn Mathews and Jennifer Bogan and Julie Spolidoro. Julie has not been running so that team needs to pick up a strong set of legs. They have yet to be heard from in the entries. The Band Of Misfits, Lynn Vasconcelos, Gretchen Parmentier, and Wendy Andre have the miles and some wins under their belts. They are formed, entered, and serious. We all are aware of their summer training conference in Newport this year. Let's not forget the GNBTC ladies. Mary Cass is surely the achor on that team, and she has been running bonkers lately. Also very quiet are the Poyant sisters. They also placed high last year. Not yet heard from, but depending on who else shows, this could get very interesting race. There is a ton of runners coming out of Days' Sports. Not sure what they are all about, but for sure you know they are in shape if Carol-Ann Days-Merrill has anything to say about it. FIRE LANES: Please help me out here. This is important, and it is becoming an issue when races are conducted at or on school property. Per School Department Policy there is to be absolutely NO PARKING in the FIRE LANES. Fire Lanes are marked by signs and yellow curbing. Violators may be ticketed. There is plenty of parking available in the lots surrounding the schools and across Middle Rd. on Lynne Ellen Drive. Thank you for your cooperation The Acushnet Road Race Committee
